Surfers Paradise & Gold Coast Region Travel Guide
The Gold Coast is a place of wonderful contrast and diversity. Celebrated surf beaches are cradled by World Heritage-listed rainforest and tranquil hinterland communities overlook a sophisticated city centre fashioned by people from around the world.
Filled with the colours of Australian life the Gold Coast features a strong multi-cultural population and a successful multi-faceted economy. From Australia’s largest boat building industry to an internationally respected film and creative industry, the Gold Coast presents itself as an inspired destination. What makes Australia’s Gold Coast really stand out from other destinations though, is the wonderful range of natural landscapes, entertainment, tours, unique experiences and world-class events.
Natural attractions are central with legendary beaches and waterways a major feature, providing an idyllic backdrop for boating excursions, scenic flights and surf-based activities. Less than 30 minutes from the beach is Australia’s largest expanse of sub-tropical rainforest, bordered by rural farmland and bush where travellers can encounter Australia’s unique native wildlife and experience a taste of country life.
The Gold Coast offers man-made attractions that are just as diverse and impressive as those natural wonders. The Gold Coast is Australia’s theme park capital with Dreamworld, Sea World, Movie World and Wet ‘n’ Wild all presenting a full day of thrills and excitement. Major events such as the Lexmark Indy 300, Magic Millions horse sales, surf carnivals and the Gold Coast Marathon also introduce an exciting option for the thrill seeking traveller. Above all, the Gold Coast presents a safe and secure holiday destination where families can freely explore and experience the very best that Australia has to offer.
The region also includes the Beaudesert district first explored in 1826. One of the first properties to be established was ‘Beau desert’ named after Henry Bayly’s station near Mudgee in New South Wales. The ‘Beaudesert’ blue, a large pumpkin, takes its name from this region. The remains of the Beaudesert tramway can be seen on the way south to Tamrookam
The region is principally known for grapes, macadamias, avocados, fruits and vegetables that utilize irrigated water from the Logan and Albert rivers. Principal towns include Rathdowney, Veresdale, Jimboomba, Waterford and Beenleigh. The McPherson Ranges and fabulous Lamington National Park form part of this region. Another attraction is ‘natural bridge’ in Springbrook National Park.
