Australian Garden Show Sydney to feature Chelsea Show Gold Medal winner

Australian gold-medal winner at this year’s RHS Chelsea Garden Flower Show, Tom Harfleet will be bringing his artistic innovation to Australia for the first Australian Garden Show Sydney in September. The British garden designer is collaborating with UK Garden Designer of the Year, Andrew Fisher Tomlin on an inspirational garden titled September Sky, which will be displayed at the Show to be held in Sydney’s Centennial Park 5-8 September.

The Australian Garden Show Sydney is a part of the NSW Events Calendar developed by the NSW Government’s tourism and events agency, Destination NSW. Designed to create an entertaining and educational experience for visitors, the Show will feature a series of talks and workshops with international and national gardening experts, plus a grand floral pavilion, retail displays, a potting tent for children and a plant crèche where purchases can be safely stored. By night the area will transform into a lounge bar, creating the perfect meeting place in charming surrounds.

Harfleet took out a gold medal yesterday at the prestigious 2013 Chelsea Flower Show for the Digital Capabilities garden designed with his brother Paul by their company Harfleet & Harfleet. The innovative garden is connected to the internet and allows the public to have an influence on its design by responding to live Twitter activity. An electronic panelled screen separates the plot in two, concealing half the installation, which is revealed gradually as Tweets discussing the Chelsea show are detected.

“We're thrilled our first garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show has won a Gold Medal and think it’s great that Chelsea has chosen to celebrate innovative design in the Fresh category. The public's response has already been amazing to Digital Capabilities, even in the relatively conservative context of Chelsea. This win is even more special in Chelsea's 100th year,” said Harflett.

“I’m delighted to bring September Sky to the Australian Garden Show Sydney in September with Andrew Fisher-Tomlin, and can't wait to be a part of this exciting new Show.”

Harfleet and Fisher-Tomlin’s inspirational garden titled September Sky is the centrepiece garden of the Australian Garden Show Sydney. It will represent Australia’s never-ending landscapes and wide open skies, using typical Australian native plants. Drawing on modern architecture and design, the feature of the piece is a cube that will reveal itself as cocoon to give an observatory view of the night time sky through an overhead portal. To add to the spectacle, light and sound will enable viewers to experience the landscape in an entirely different concept at night.

A team of Australians at this year’s Chelsea show also made headlines around the world, winning best-in-show for the Trailfinders Australian Garden presented by Fleming’s Nurseries. It’s the first time in the show’s 100-year history that an Australian team has won the top award.

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said “The Australian Garden Show Sydney will promote the extraordinary range of gardening and landscape design in NSW to an international audience. The Show is exclusive to Sydney and is a key event on Australia’s best Events Calendar, as well as our excellent regional garden festivals.”

The Australian Garden Show Sydney will showcase local talent alongside influential international horticulturalists and provide the platform for gardeners, landscapers and designers to really make their mark.
