Katherine Gorge - Katherine, NT

Katherine Gorge

The close proximity Katherine Gorge to the town of Katherine makes it one of the most accessible of the many spectacular gorges in the territory. Katherine Gorge is located 35 kms north-east of the town of Katherine, about 354 kms south of Darwin. Canyon walls have Aboriginal paintings, trees growing at strange angles, and bird nests tucked away in small caves where migrating swallows return each year.

The grandeur of the great square sided walls, change colour with the hours of the day and are best experienced by boat. The small freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks and ledges have grown used to the chug of boats up and down the waterways.

The semi-tropical conditions of the river gorge can be seen from the growth of pandanus and slender palms that find precarious footing in rock crevices along with native figs and a variety of ferns.
