Founded by Captain W.H. Bacchus to whose grave there is an annual pilgrimage here. The town reflects progress and is approached from Melbourne down the beautiful Avenue of Honour.
A visit to the nearby Werribee Gorge National Park is worthwhile. The shopping centres are good as are also the facilities for out-door sport. For campers there is a natural site on the river flat near the town.
