Airlie Beach Town - Airlie Beach, QLD

Airlie Beach Town

Airley Beach, a town in Queensland, is the gateway to the 74 Whitsunday Islands that lie inside the Great Barrier Reef. The Town is a perfect holiday destination with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants.

Airlie Beach is easily accessible. A number of buses serve the airport terminal, and drive to Airlie beach or other locations. All but one must be pre-booked. The tickets cost a flat $15 per person one way and can be purchased in a queue at a clearly marked booth just inside the arrival gate.

Another option is to take a taxi, there is also a booth inside the arrivals gate, at a cost $15 per person.

The ride to Airlie beach is smooth and takes about 40 minutes.

The beach is small and the sea inhabited by marine stingers, the Irukandji jellyfish from November to May. In order to provide somewhere for visitors to swim, the local council, has built a small - medium sized swimming lagoon on the foreshore, similar to the lagoon found in Cairns. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is 4,300sqm and contains 4.5 million litres of fresh, self chlorinated water, landscaped with a bridge and surrounding grass to lie on. It is watched by life guards during the day and security at night.

On Saturday morning there is a charming market along the waterfront, with a range of locally produced fresh food stalls and a variety of arts/crafts.

Airlie Beach is surrounded by several small communities: Bowen to the north, that is renowned for its wonderful beaches, Shute Harbour to the west which is the departure point for the island ferries and Abel Point Marina to the east, is home to many of the cruising yachts.
