The Golden City has a charm and beauty entirely all of its own. From the romantic early days of the goldfields Bendigo has emerged a wealthy progressive city. Spacious streets with avenues of trees; substantial buildings; Bendigo, a modern city and fourth in importance in the State, is situated practically in the centre of Victoria, 156 kms by road and 162 kms by rail north of Melbourne. It has developed from a canvas town of the gold-rush days when nearly 800 tons of gold were won from its mines. It is now laid out with broad tree-lined streets and spacious parks and gardens, which make it one of the most picturesque cities in Victoria.

The observation tower on the top of One Tree Hill, a favourite picnic ground about five kms south, affords a good bird's eye view of Bendigo. Lake Weeroona, which can be reached by bus, provides opportunities of boating and sculling. The Botanic Gardens at White Hills, three kms from the city, can be reached by bus; the Botanic Gardens; charming Rosalind Park; sports grounds, tennis courts and golf links are but a few of the city's attractions. The Agricultural Show, the Bendigo Cup, the Easter Fair, and the May Musical Competitions attract attention from all parts of the globe. The climate in summer and winter is ideal.
