Public Library. North terrrace

The Public Library Building, first occupied in 1844, is a fine freestone structure, containing 200,000 volumes, covering all branches of knowledge except law and medicine.

At the rear of the main building are The Archives, wherein are kept original documents dealing with South Australia since its foundation.

The Library is situated a few minutes’ walk east from Adelaide Railway Station. Also in the same block is the Institute Building, in which copies of every South Australian newspaper and leading interstate and overseas newspapers are filed.
