Melbourne Museum, Nicholson Street, Carlton Gardens

Melbourne Museum explores life in Victoria, from our natural environment to our culture and history.

Located in Carlton Gardens, opposite the historic Royal Exhibition Building, the award-winning Melbourne Museum houses a permanent collection in eight galleries, including one just for children.

Highlights include a complete skeleton of a blue whale, the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, a living rainforest, the racehorse Phar Lap and an IMAX theatre on site. Major international exhibitions are presented in the Touring Hall.

A visit to Melbourne Museum offers rich and often surprising insights into life in Victoria.

In the hall of Australian Ethnology is a fine collection of the weapons, domestic articles, and ceremonial objects of the Australian aborigines. The adjoining hall of General Zoology exhibits reproductions of a wide variety of animals. Facing the entrance to this hall is the reproduction of the famous Australian race-horse, Phar Lap, a fine example of the sculpture-taxidermy of Louis Jonas. The first floor is devoted mainly to Australian mammals, birds, reptiles, and minerals.
