Great Ocean Road Walk, Apollo Bay to Glenample - Apollo Bay, VIC

Great Ocean Road Walk, Apollo Bay to Glenample

The Great Ocean Road, renowned for its coastal rugged beauty, can now be explored by foot with the launch of a new $2.3 billion trail, The Great Ocean Walk.

The track starts from Apollo Bay, two hours from Melbourne, and continues the existing trail to the equally impressive, but until now relatively unknown, coastal terrain. The Great Ocean Walk extends 91km from Apollo bay to Glenample Homestead, and features the famous limestone rocks known as the Twelve Apostles. Parks Victoria has designed the trail for walkers of almost any ability and options extend to short walks, day hikes, overnight or multiple night camping options. For the ambitious long-haul bushwalkers there is also the challenge of the complete eight day and seven night experience.

Walkers can choose to stay overnight at one of the seven purpose-built campsites along the walk or off walk at a variety of local accommodation, from bed and breakfasts, self-contained cottages, to motels and well-established private camping grounds. Bush walkers now have access to remote and beautiful areas like Station Beach and Moonlight Head.

The walk also winds through wet fern and rainforest gullies, which have specimens of the world's tallest flowering tree, the Mountain Ash. Other areas included in the trail are coastal Heathlands and the sheltered coastal estuaries of the Aire and Gellibrand Rivers, which are home to an abundance of wildlife.

Special walking tours run by licensed operators include guided walks, assisted overnight walking experiences, camping and walking equipment hire and food provision.
